Though the movie could have been a little longer, I believe that the Delaney sisters would have been quite pleased with the production. The building is invaded by terrorists, leaving the cop, who's escaped to the roof, as the other partygoers' only hope for survival. On Christmas Eve a New York cop goes to Los Angeles to visit his estranged wife at her company's Christmas party, held on the top floor of a huge skyscraper. She wanted to see the ending. Though several decades younger than the Delany sisters, Joyce and Thomas, who previously worked together in the 2017 short film Sweet Dreams, Momma , represent a generation of seasoned actresses as well trained for the stage as for the screen. Sadie quietly and sweetly broke barriers to become the first African-American home-ec teacher in New York City, while Bessie, with her own brand of outspokenness, became the second African-American dentist in New York City.

So yes, Having Our Say, it can generate the same kind of interest, because you still have that group of people who are starved to look at themselves onstage. I believe our production is good enough to be revived on Broadway. It also has a very good supporting group of actors that truly help move the plot along. And they need to see great actors who know how to portray it in a way that inspires them. . . Delany, was born into slavery and would eventually became the first African-American Episcopal bishop elected in the United Statesāwould become a pioneer in her own right. When a reporter Madigan comes to interview the two ladies, Sadie and Bessie talk about how they overcame the racist Jim Crow laws, and how their parents handled the turbulent times with dignity and wisdom. Bessie in Her 20s: Audra McDonald. It's truly worth it. I watched the movie right after I finished reading the book. With the support of each other and their family, they survived encounters with racism and sexism in their own different ways.

Over the course of their more-than-century-long lives, they lived through Jim Crow, became part of the first generation of American women with the right to vote, witnessed the Harlem Renaissance and civil rights movement, and mingled with some of the most famed names in history, including W. This literature needs to be archived for our peopleāfor our childrenāso that they understand the eloquent way in which we articulate our experiences. That is what it has done to our country. I even have some old Diahann Carroll record albums late 50's early 60's in my collection. Will a New York cop be able to handle some crime action, LA style? Both would earn advanced degrees, with Sadie becoming the first black woman to teach domestic science at the high school level in the New York City public school system, while Bessie was the second black woman to practice dentistry in the state of New York.

The lowest-priced brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging where packaging is applicable. You know, we think Jim Crow was something that happened and it went away. In the end, I highly recommend this movie as well as the book and feel that it would truly be worth watching again, and again as it was a truly WONDERFUL production. At the ages of 103 and 101, they told their story to Amy Hill Hearth, a white New York Times reporter who published an article about them. Stellar Performances Give Two Real Life Characters New Life in Our Hearts My wife was watching this movie on TV when it was abruptly interrupted. This is what we were supposed to do.

I also wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Ella Joyce: One of the reasons I feel that this production is so significant right now is because it deals the way it does with Jim Crow. Done in flashback form it gives a well rounded view of what life was like being black over a 100 year period without being to graphic for young teens. And that is what is making me feel so gratified and so good. See details for additional description. I found that the movie was pretty much right on point with the book which is unusual since most times the movies have been modified to the point that they're hardly worth watching and the characters are sometimes unrecognizable. That is why we have grieving black mothers that nobody seems to care about.
