David Crosthwait was an American inventor and engineer who made significant contributions to the field of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1899 and grew up in a working-class family. His parents were William and Mary Crosthwait, and not much is known about them.
Crosthwait was the youngest of six children and was raised by his parents to be hardworking and independent. He excelled in math and science in school, and after graduating from high school, he attended Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville.
After completing his education, Crosthwait began working as an engineer for the Nashville Gas Company. He quickly rose through the ranks and became known for his innovative ideas and problem-solving skills. In the 1930s, Crosthwait left the Nashville Gas Company to start his own business, which focused on developing and patenting new HVAC systems.
Throughout his career, Crosthwait patented many important innovations in the field of HVAC, including the first air conditioning system for trains and the first high-rise building air conditioning system. He also developed the first computer-controlled HVAC system and was the first African American to be granted a patent for an air conditioning unit.
Crosthwait's contributions to the field of HVAC have had a lasting impact and have made him an important figure in the history of engineering and technology. He died in 1976 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence. Although not much is known about his parents, it is clear that they played a significant role in shaping Crosthwait's character and drive to succeed.
