J.G. Ballard's short story "Billenium" depicts a dystopian society in which overpopulation has led to a severe shortage of living space. The story follows the character of Henry, who lives in a cramped apartment with two other people, and his visit to his friend Bill, who has managed to secure a larger living space for himself.
As Henry tours Bill's apartment, he becomes increasingly envious of the extra space and amenities that his friend has been able to acquire. He realizes that the only way to obtain such a luxurious living situation is to be wealthy, a fact that frustrates and angers him. The contrast between the cramped conditions of Henry's apartment and the spaciousness of Bill's serves as a commentary on the social and economic inequalities that exist within this society.
Despite the advantages of his larger living space, Bill is not entirely satisfied with his circumstances. He tells Henry about a group of people who have taken to living in the abandoned buildings of the city, and reveals that he has considered joining them in their pursuit of greater freedom and autonomy. The concept of these "urban nomads" serves as a contrast to the rigid and controlled nature of society, and suggests the possibility of alternative ways of living.
Overall, "Billenium" is a thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of overpopulation and the ways in which individuals may seek to overcome the constraints imposed on them by society. The story raises important questions about the value of personal freedom and the importance of addressing social and economic inequalities.
