Divergent is a science fiction novel written by Veronica Roth and published in 2011. The novel is set in a dystopian society where people are divided into five factions based on their personality traits: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence).
The protagonist of the novel is a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in the Abnegation faction and is about to undergo the process of choosing her permanent faction. During the process, she discovers that she is "divergent," meaning that she does not fit neatly into any one faction and has qualities of several different factions. This revelation puts her in danger, as the society views divergents as a threat.
As Beatrice goes through the process of choosing her faction, she becomes increasingly conflicted between her loyalty to her family in Abnegation and her desire to be honest with herself and follow her own path. In the end, she chooses to join the Dauntless faction and changes her name to Tris.
As Tris undergoes the rigorous training and initiation process to become a member of Dauntless, she makes friends and enemies, and begins to uncover a sinister plot within the society. She discovers that the Erudite faction is planning to overthrow the government and take control, using the Dauntless as their weapon. Tris also learns that the society's leaders have been keeping secrets about the past and the true nature of the factions, and that her status as a divergent makes her uniquely qualified to help stop the Erudite's plans.
With the help of her friends and allies, Tris confronts the Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews, and helps to prevent the overthrow of the government. In the end, Tris decides to stay in Dauntless and continue fighting for change within the society.
Divergent is a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of identity, conformity, and rebellion. It is the first book in a trilogy, followed by Insurgent and Allegiant.
