Poseidon, the god of the sea, plays a significant role in Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey." As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Poseidon holds a grudge against the protagonist, Odysseus, and actively works against him on his journey home to Ithaca.
At the beginning of the story, Poseidon is angry with Odysseus because he blinded Poseidon's son, the Cyclops Polyphemus. In retaliation, Poseidon causes numerous difficulties for Odysseus during his journey, such as stormy seas and shipwrecks. He also assists the suitors in their attempt to win over Odysseus's wife, Penelope, and take over his kingdom.
Despite Poseidon's animosity towards Odysseus, the hero is able to outwit and overcome the challenges that the god presents. He is aided in this by the protection of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, who favors Odysseus and helps him in his endeavors.
In addition to his role as an antagonist in the story, Poseidon is also depicted as a powerful and fearsome deity. He is able to control the oceans and create earthquakes, as seen when he shakes the ground to try and kill Odysseus and his men as they flee from Polyphemus's cave.
Overall, Poseidon serves as an important foil to Odysseus in "The Odyssey," representing the unpredictable and sometimes dangerous forces of nature that the hero must navigate on his journey home.
