Vintage Review: Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights (1992)
Director William Wyler was of course really at ease within this genre and he directed some powerful drama's in mostly the '30's, like this movie. You've GOT to see this movie. But he and a young Cathy manage to bond despite the class difference, a bond that eventually blossoms into true love. So in conclusion, fantastic and the best version. David Niven, ideally cast as the milquetoasty Edgar Linton, actually had a clause in his contract which freed him from having to do crying scenes! Still, I barely forced myself to the end. Hindley's dislike of this behavior may include subterranean levels of incestuous feelings.

The direction is strong throughout as is the acting. But this film proves for me that a book like Wuthering Heights can work with the right mood and cast. Yes, he mistreated her but having him as a wife batterer makes no sense, is he not bad enough already? Some will make the connection that these are the same moors haunted by the more recent Yorkshire Ripper. Many whole scenes are intact, the dialog exactly as written originally. If Bronte could not write anything else due to her early death, this novel still enshrined her among the great novelists.
Wuthering Heights Review: A Gripping and Thrilling Read
His portrayal of a man broken by inner weakness and failure, to me, has always been a film highlight. Instead of a dream, the visitor here sees Catherine's ghost, which sets a supernatural tone that is too obvious. The rest of the lead cast is likewise brilliant, especially with regards to Juliette Binoche's endearing Catherine. I have not read the Emily Bronte novel on which this film is based so obviously I cannot comment on the effectiveness of it as an adaptation I understand that almost the entire second half of the book was excised. The movie has a real great look and atmosphere over it, of course also with some fine looking sets and costumes as you would expect from a period piece such as this movie. The role belongs to him.
Emily review
I sat through the first half hour and could just not bear it any more! I cannot die without my soul! The flow is off and it feels rushed. Watch it and weep; not only at the film's content but for a cinematic era long dead and never coming back. The ending is beautifully done, aided by some very John Barry-like music. No one is totally angelic or demonic, -good people are driven to do terrible things, and the worst of people love more passionately than all the others. I'll make special mention of Janet McTeer, who portrays Ellen Dean, the housemaid who knows everyone's secrets. There's a gentleness and a beauty to the way the protagonists interact with their land -- even the mud that covers them after they've wrestled on the ground is complicit in their blooming love. They all went down to Robert Donat in Goodbye Mr.
Wuthering Heights: Venice Film Review
There are a few changes {maybe one day we will be able to see Heathcliff and Cathy first meet the Lintons as children rather than adults} and the first part of the story is rushed. Olivier got the first of his Oscar nominations for Best Actor and he was up for that award with Clark Gable for Gone With the Wind, James Stewart for Mr. Music Ryuichi Sakamoto flows like a moor wind segueing through the various parts of the film, returning periodically to its distinctive title theme. David Niven liked working with Olivier, Oberon and the rest, but he hated his part of Edgar Linton. .
'Wuthering Heights' Movie Review
One of the finest romantic films ever filmed, this 1939 Samuel Goldwyn production rates with many - including myself - as being the most beloved version of Emily Bronte's haunting novel. Other film adaptations ignore this small ray of optimism and hence the novel is remembered as a big misery fest. Every adaptation of Wuthering Heights is worth the look though some work better than others. Why were Heathcliff and Cathy, who looked to be at least in their thirties, running around the moors like little kids? This does not happen to "Wuthering Heights. Expertly played by the actors and directed with adroitness, it's a haunting tale of tragedy, love and passions never to be sated.
Wuthering Heights (2012) Movie Review
Orla Brady was 37! However, she is slated to marry Edgar Linton and cannot see herself wed to Heathcliff, who leaves Wuthering Heights. Few can argue that the best part of "Gone With The Wind" is the first half. But they could find love in death -- because in death, they could be what they really were all along -- children; mere children forced to grow up all too quickly with the death of the man who cared deeply for them, thus forcing Hindley to become head of the household. Never has an adaptation brought this classic Victorian novel so completely to the screen. I don't think I've ever seen a Heathcliff so given to violence. Janet McTeer stands out in support, Jeremy Northam doesn't have enough screen-time but he plays the tormentor-to-tormented character of Hindley to a tee and Jason Riddington is a charming Hareton. The film starts captioning on Emily Bronte novel : ¨On the barren Yorkshire moors in England , a hundred years ago, stood a house as bleak and desolate as the wastes around it.
Wuthering Heights (TV Movie 1998)

The criticisms of her accent is unfair; she has a clear French twang but it's hardly up there in the Hall of Bad Movie Accents. Bitter Heathcliff escapes but long time after returns, now rich, to disrupt the life of Cathy now married to another. Most people acclaim the film's soundtrack; it did have its good moments, particularly after Catherine's death, but I didn't find it astounding in any way. Overall, one of the better Wuthering Heights adaptations and recommended. Favourite bits: Miles Mander's melodramatics at the beginning resulting in Flora Robson's picture-long flashback; the windswept pair on the rocks; the pair gatecrashing the dance; Oberon's unravelling to Niven and the tear-jerking finale.
