Letters from the Inside by John Marsden is a young adult novel that tells the story of two teenage girls, Mandy and Tracey, who become pen pals and form a close bond through their letters. Mandy lives in Australia, while Tracey lives in the United States, but despite the distance between them, they find that they have a lot in common and are able to support each other through their struggles and challenges.
The novel deals with a range of themes, including friendship, family, and self-discovery. Mandy and Tracey's relationship is at the heart of the story, and their letters provide a window into their inner thoughts and feelings as they navigate the ups and downs of adolescence. Mandy is dealing with issues at home, including a difficult relationship with her mother and the absence of her father, while Tracey is struggling to come to terms with her mother's alcoholism and the resulting chaos in her household.
Through their correspondence, Mandy and Tracey are able to confide in each other and offer each other guidance and support. They share their secrets and their hopes for the future, and their relationship helps them to grow and mature as individuals. The novel also explores the complexities of family relationships, as both Mandy and Tracey struggle to find their place within their respective families and to understand their own identities.

It is a poignant exploration of the power of friendship and the importance of communication and understanding, and it serves as a reminder that even when we feel isolated and alone, we are all connected in some way.

. I only put the ad in as a joke, one day when I was sitting round with nothing to do like every day. Like what would happen if the teenage trolls who repeatedly go to Yahoo! But, I couldn't put it down! So thanks for proving me right. . There is a lot left open to reader interpretation--did Mandy and the others in her family come to a violent end at the hand of Steve? The reader is ushered into Tracey's life of day-by-day survival in the A Block of Garret, and although we never find out what she did to get there, we can only imagine, which is far more powerful. I recommend this book to anyone and think it is of five star qualities. . .

Anyway, another all-important question I've been pondering since I started writing this blog and revisiting a number of children's books is this. Australian John Marsden's novel might stun post-teen readers with how good it is. Tracey continuously writes, getting increasingly worried, especially when her letters are sent back to her with "Return To Sender" on them, not in Mandy's hand writing. I'd recommend it for mature teens and adults. .

Overall grade: A++ I'm a Mum looking for some input into the suitability of this novel for my 14 year old son who is studying it for Year 9 English Australia. I wanted you to be normal, the world's most normal person. Through reading this novel I have learnt more about the inner strength needed to go through these emotional, change of life journeys and the support factors that are needed. The book itself, taken at face value, is not so chilling - it's what your mind creates to fill in the spaces that Marsden leaves in his story. . It appears to Mandy that Tracey's life is perfect, as she has a wonderful boyfriend, rich and caring parents, and she is close to her siblings.

Review: Letters From the Inside by John Marsden
I've read it three or four times in the last ten years and in each read-through, I discover one more facet of the story that I've missed. Andrews ghostwriter Andrew Neiderman began working on the Diaries Series, a spin-off, or companion series to the Dollanganger Series which is best remembered for its haunting first novel Flowers in the Attic. It starts out with a girl named Mandy who starts writing to a girl named Tracy it's in letter format who seems the ideal life. None of them seemed right. The two girls had each other to lean on and help them through what they were encountering, the journey would have been a whole lot harder without this. As they write, some surprising truth's come out and they grow closer. Tracey begins to get no replies from Mandy and sends multiple messages which get returned, but she stays persistent like Mandy had been.

It takes a special kind of writer to make a story work with the "cliffhanger" ending. It is one of the best books I have ever read! It is absolutely amazing; I could hardly put it down and once you've finished it will stick in your mind forever. . So when I read this book it really helped me realize that a friend is someone who, not only cares for you but, realizes when you need help and just helps you, no matter what!! If it was put in the curriculum then it would only be suitable for year nines and over because of the language and the sexual references. Well, seeing you asked, I'll tell you: it got an A+ and the teacher said she was going to enter it in a competition.
