Their brother Kiwi has gone to the mainland to work. They are understood, I hope. There are still moments that the thought of going back to him lingers in her mind and she wonders if Bird Man is her only chance of staying alive in this hostile environment.
Which leaves twelve-year-old Ava and sixteen-year-old Kiwi to try to salvage the bankrupt wreck the family park has become. Returning home from a visit to the mainland to ask for money from Grandfather Sawtooth, the Bigtree family walks toward the house. It also signals the beginning of the end of the book, where Karen tries frantically to pull everything together, resulting in lots of dropped threads and unanswered questions, and an overly maudlin and utterly unfulfilling closing scene. Small, stagnant puddles, on the uneven planks of timber wood reflected the dark, brooding sky above - rarely disturbed by the callous slices of moonlight seeping through the clouds, creating a specular reflection through a ripple in the languid water. The mom wa I didn't like this book because it was boring, not interesting and annoying. . There was certainly potential to this saga of an alligator-wrestling family's downfall, but after nicely establishing the characters and their situation, Russell doesn't seem to know where to go. Being the only male that Osceola has seen in awhile, she falls in love with the ghost and run off together, boat and all, leaving poor Ava alone. When Kiwi sees his father stumble and then bend over in a coughing fit, he feels sorry for him. . She concludes that the boat is a dredge, a ship equipped with an apparatus that can dig up the sludge that has accumulated on the bottom of the swamp.
