Jane Austen was an English novelist known for her wit, social commentary, and depiction of upper-class society in the early 19th century. Born in 1775 in Steventon, England, Austen was the seventh of eight children in a family of gentry. Despite living in a time when women were not encouraged to pursue higher education, Austen was well-read and had a passion for writing from a young age.
Austen's earliest works were written when she was a teenager and consisted of satirical poems and plays. However, it was not until she was in her thirties that she published her first novel, "Sense and Sensibility," in 1811. This was followed by "Pride and Prejudice" in 1813, "Mansfield Park" in 1814, "Emma" in 1815, and "Persuasion" in 1817.
Austen's novels were praised for their wit, humor, and insight into the social conventions of her time. She was a master of the form of the novel known as "social realism," which sought to depict society and its customs in a realistic and accurate manner. Austen's novels are also known for their strong female characters, who often struggle to find their place in a world that values them primarily for their beauty and marriageability.
Despite her success as a writer, Austen's personal life was rather uneventful. She never married and spent much of her time caring for her family and writing. She died at the age of 41 in Winchester, England, and is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
