Into the Whirlwind, written by Eugenia Ginzburg, is a memoir that tells the story of the author's experiences during the Stalinist purges in the Soviet Union. Ginzburg was a professor of literature and a member of the Communist Party in the 1930s, and she was arrested and imprisoned for her political beliefs and alleged involvement in a conspiracy against the state.

The book begins with Ginzburg's arrest and her subsequent journey to various labor camps and prisons in the Soviet Union. Along the way, she meets a wide range of people, including other prisoners, guards, and officials, and she learns about the brutality and corruption of the Stalinist regime.

One of the most striking aspects of the book is the way that Ginzburg describes the psychological effects of imprisonment. She writes about the constant fear and uncertainty that she and other prisoners lived with, as well as the ways in which they were isolated and cut off from the outside world. Despite these hardships, however, Ginzburg also writes about the ways in which prisoners formed close bonds and helped one another to survive.

Another theme that emerges in the book is the role of ideology in the Stalinist purges. Ginzburg writes about how she and other prisoners were accused of being "enemies of the people" and "counter-revolutionaries" simply because they held different political beliefs or questioned the official line. She also writes about the ways in which Stalin and his followers used propaganda and manipulation to maintain their hold on power.

Into the Whirlwind is a powerful and poignant memoir that offers a unique perspective on one of the darkest periods in Soviet history. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs, even in the face of great adversity. Overall, it is a compelling and thought-provoking read that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who picks it up.

. Sweet without being sappy, it shows a different side of Zack--and rounds out Mollie's character wonderfully. I felt the chill of the water as they took refuge and the sorrow as they watched their beloved city burn. Her story shows the strange desire of the Soviet Union to make even its most outlandish oppression appear as consent. Elizabeth Camden's details, both of the aftermath of the fire and the protagonist's occupation, thoroughly immerse the reader in the time period.

The door banged shut. When she found out she was only going to get 10 years in prison and loss of all personal property, she was ecstatic! I thought she was a great character, once I got to know her. And I don't have to have the steamy sex scenes. When I read the synopsis for the book I thought how in the world are two people going to fall in love again when a child has been kidnapped! Through the trees, she could hear the roar of a chainsaw, hear see two-by-fours going up to form the sides of the house under construction. The first two years she spent in solitary, although fortunately for her, a lack of space meant that she soon had a cell mate with whom she developed a strong friendship. I wish all hardcover books were sewn through the fold. In the beginning of the story I LOVED him! Zack does little to hide his attraction to Mollie, while she does little to help it along.

Dirk says he will help, but he keeps his distance emotionally from Meg, the one woman he ever truly let get close to his heart. These traits are echoed throughout the story and shown in eloquent detail. If Megan can trust Dirk to bring back her son, safe and sound, why can't she trust him with her heart as well? On one hand, I like the period and the historic details that were worked into the plot, but on the other, I think the romance between Molly and Zach was too straightforward, predictable and repetitive. Back to being the books I love to read.

She was a great mom and could be really sweet and brave. One has always loved her, but the other has the power to save her. The reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because I'd like to see my heroines other than prim and proper, and my heroes other than intense and impulsive. . Those who devised and carried out the operations of 1937 found that it was simply not practical to keep such multitudes in prison for ten or twenty years: it was inconsistent with the tempo of the age and with its economy.

Dirk is great; Megan, not so much. Starting out, I thought, she thought, that the entire insanity of the purges was the fault of Stalin. Speaking personally, I am — I have to face it — the spoiled and sheltered product of a relatively enlightened society. Not unbelievable so much as contrived. Dirk and Megan had a hot and whirlwind romance that ended after her protection detail did with a we are too different speech.
