In "The Pearl," John Steinbeck tells the story of Kino, a poor pearl diver living in La Paz, Mexico. Kino's life is forever changed when he discovers an enormous pearl, which he believes will bring him and his family financial security and a better life.
However, Kino's dream of a better life is quickly shattered as the pearl becomes a source of conflict and temptation for those around him. Kino's neighbors and even his own family members become jealous of the pearl and try to take it from him. Kino's wife, Juana, begs him to get rid of the pearl, warning him that it will bring nothing but trouble, but Kino is determined to hold on to it and use it to improve his family's circumstances.
As Kino struggles to protect the pearl and his family, he becomes increasingly desperate and violent. He even kills a man who tries to steal the pearl from him, leading to a cycle of retaliation and violence that ultimately destroys Kino's family and his dreams.
In the end, Kino realizes that the pearl was not a blessing, but a curse, and he returns it to the sea, where it came from. The pearl symbolizes the corrupting influence of greed and the destructive power of material possessions. Kino's pursuit of the pearl exposes the dark side of human nature and the dangers of letting material wealth dictate one's actions.
Overall, "The Pearl" is a powerful and thought-provoking allegory that explores the dangers of greed and the corrupting influence of material possessions. Through the story of Kino and the pearl, Steinbeck illustrates the destructive power of greed and the importance of staying true to one's values and beliefs.

Okay, so as we follow Kino through the increasing complexity of the problems that develop as a result of his ownership of this pearl, many issues are raised. Because of her position as a wife in a traditional society, Juana is necessarily subservient to Kino. And their difficulties were severe.
By the end of the novel, after his efforts to keep the pearl have resulted in the disaster of Coyotito's death, Kino demonstrates a renewed respect for his wife and a return to his initial values, particularly when he allows Juana to walk by his side and then offers her the honor of throwing the pearl into the ocean. Depending on how fast they read and Unless they totally have to, I would not recommend it. Her dark eyes made little reflected stars. The man who looked out at him was one of his own race. More thieves attack him that night, but he remains resolved to make the journey despite Juana's warning that the pearl is evil and her suggestions to get rid of it. Kino took off his hat and stood waiting.
He tells Kino and Juana, Coyotito is still in danger; the doctor then makes a pill and forces it down the baby's throat, saying he will come back in an hour to check on him. Kino and his family go to his brother Juan's, who has already warned Kino about cheats and Kino's pride. Now Kino got up and wrapped his blanket about his head and nose and shoulders. Adam is the helpless but passionate and vulnerable side of me, a loose cannon of emotion who tries to hand off the fuse to anyone willing to take it, but Charles reminds me of the impulsive and seemingly fragile side of me which actually becomes my strongest trait during times of anger or fear. See if he has any money! Kino watched with the detachment of God while a dusty ant frantically tried to escape the sand trap an ant lion had dug for him. As they are on the way, they realize that there are trackers following them to steal the pearl.
Three other dealers come and say similar things, one offering to buy it for 500 pesos. It's his greed that has been his undoing. When Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are chased into the mountains, they find it very difficult to maneuver the rocks and thorny branches. Climbing through the brush, she sees the pearl lying in the path. Inside the oyster is an enormous pearl, much larger than any Kino has ever seen or found. I hate it when I can't connect to the main characters or ANY of the characters. Kino creates a temporary shelter for Juana and Coyotito in a cave.
Kino, A Dynamic Character In The Pearl By John Steinbeck
Because they were happy and excited they thought everyone shared their joy…. This man asks, "What is it? Unfortunately, the negotiations do not end there. Outside the brush house in the tuna clump, a covey of little birds chittered and flurried with their wings. Meanwhile, some distance away from the fight, Juana gets up on her knees and begins to make her way home. As he sneaks up, Coyotito cries. He mustn't have dared to rise in life, to aspire to reach higher status.
The Pearl is Steinbeck's retelling of a Mexican folktale. Kino instructs Apolonia to bring Juan Tomás to them and to keep their whereabouts a secret. This is a great place to research general background information on John Steinbeck. A late moth blustered in to find the fire. However, a sense of evil accompanies it. In the final scenes, in which Kino is tracked by a posse, it is not clear in the text whether the group are thieves or law enforcement officers hunting Kino for his killing of the man on the beach. To admit what he doesn't know will injure his pride and his strength as leader of his family.
To get him would be a remarkable thing. However, as time passes Kino begins to think of all the wonders he can have with the money he'll get when he sells the pearl. After Kino finds the pearl, he personally visits the family at home, acting much friendlier than at their first meeting and even pretending to heal Coyotito's scorpion sting with ammonia. In short, he doesn't seem to think of his characters as people, just creatures buffeted by terrible circumstances. Also, he justifies when a husband beats his wife and she obediently suffers because HE'S A MAN AND HE KNOWS BEST.
After that, Kino and his family were in a constant battle against evil to preserve the good that they enjoyed before. Through this folk tale, Steinbeck conveys that money is the root of all evils in the world. A literary masterpiece that should be read nonetheless, I rate The Pearl 4 stars- 5 for Steinbeck's prose and story telling skills, and 2. The Pearl: A Preliminary Textual Study". The symbolism is built up layer by layer, like an oyster coating a grain of sand, and the result is a flawless tale, smooth and clear, like the Pearl of the World.
