American Psycho is a satirical novel by Bret Easton Ellis, first published in 1991. The story follows the life of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investment banker living in New York City in the 1980s. Bateman is outwardly successful and highly educated, but inwardly he is deeply troubled and suffers from a range of psychological issues.
Throughout the novel, Bateman engages in a series of increasingly depraved and violent acts, including murder, rape, and torture. He is driven by a deep sense of entitlement and an obsession with consumer culture, and he sees the people around him as nothing more than objects to be used and discarded at will.
