The publisher would not relent on this, so Tolkien pinned his hopes on the American edition to be published about six months later. Where the dwarves rely on gut instinct and weaponry, Bilbo uses his ring, his trickery, and his words to survive on the open road. The Goblins capture Bilbo and his companions and take their ponies. The travelers try to find their way out of the cave as the Goblins retreat, but Bilbo falls on his way out and loses consciousness. One of the ponies falls into the river, which causes the party to lose most of their food supply.

As an older person Gandalf has great wisdom gained through life experience which he puts to use in mentoring and guiding Bilbo, as well as using his powers as a wizard to help the group on their travels to successfully accomplish their archetypal quest of recovering the treasure. Bilbo entertains Smaug with riddles and with flattery gets Smaug to reveal his weak spot, a small place on his left breast without armor.
