At the diner, the girls flirt with boys with stylish haircuts. A few days later Marjane tells her parents she's getting divorced and moving to France. How do all those elements contribute to the conveyance of the themes and morals of the book to its audience? People are so wound up in their ideals and their struggles that they project these ideas and struggles onto any situation they see.

He is later arrested and executed for being a Russian agent. She realizes that the survival of the Iranian regime depends on the war and that the regime is using the war as an excuse to crush all descent in society. She has consciously used the cinch style of illustrations as her main purpose is to make the readers realise that different truths exist even when we are not able to see it. What would I do? With time, the situation got worse. When her parents send her to school in a new country, she must take on adult responsibilities of caring for herself at an extremely young age. Feeling guilty for her lie, Marji reassured God that she will become a prophet, but only in secret. Graphic novels usually portray characters that allow you to see their face, which tells a story within itself. After the Shah fell from power in 1979, Anoosh was released from prison, but when Islamic fundamentalists consolidate their grip on power, they hunt Anoosh down, imprison him, and later execute him. Students in my other classes often pick up the book and read it even though it is not assigned to them.

I decided to look at four different themes that are brought up throughout the novel. Graphic novels are like comic books in some ways such as the layout, but graphic novels tend to be longer and have more of a serious subject matter. Later, Marji learns that Iran has finally retaken the city of Khorramshahr from the Iraqis, an event that many felt would lead to the end of the war. She also begins to understand that different social classes exist, and that this is one root of much tension and suffering in the country. While the topic was serious and people were killed, I feel like parents would have less concern about this book being read at middle school.

I absolutely loved the artwork in this one — the stark black and white worked so well to visualize the extremes that Marjane experienced.
