James's subtle mastery of the art of fiction is nowhere more evident than in The Beast in the Jungle, regarded by many as his greatest achievement in short fiction, a gripping portrait of a man alienated from life and love. Decided to read it because the hardback book I'm reading isn't backlit and they've dimmed the lights in our room. A woman might have been, as it were, everything to him, and it might yet present him, in no connexion that any one seemed held to recognise.

He had been struck one day, after an absence exceeding his usual measure, with her suddenly looking much older to him than he had ever thought of her being; then he recognised that the suddenness was all on his side—he had just simply and suddenly noticed. If she had moreover, like himself, to make sacrifices to their real truth, it was to be granted that her compensation might have affected her as more prompt and more natural. The Beast in the Jungle is probably his most masterful tale—novella or short story, you decide—and it's one that I've read at least ten times. It was as if, at the same time, her light might at any instant go out; wherefore he must make the most of it. The escape would have been to love her; then, then he would have lived.

He had a screw loose for her but she liked him in spite of it and was practically, against the rest of the world, his kind wise keeper, unremunerated but fairly amused and, in the absence of other near ties, not disreputably occupied. This has helped revive the narrative and remind viewers of the movie's adoration. May told him not to guess, but he decides to find out anyway.

I liked the fact that it was short and we found out the meaning and the "beast in the jungle" pretty quickly, but other than that this book just wasn't my cup of tea. Then it was, just at the turn, as he afterwards made it out to himself, that, everything else failing, she herself decided to take up the case and, as it were, save the situation. Let's face it, as lovers of literature, poetry, biographies and plays we are invested in exploring, experiencing and living the human condition. Reminded me of William Gass without the fun, Ben Marcus without the word substitutions and weird breath pathologies, and Poe without much story. That at least, belated and bitter, had something of the taste of life. They form a life, Platonic, close, hovered around this.
