"Apollo 13" is a 1995 American space docudrama film directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris. The film is based on the real-life events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, which was launched on April 11, 1970.
The film opens with a brief history of the Apollo program, explaining that the United States was in a race with the Soviet Union to land a man on the moon. The Apollo 13 mission, with astronauts Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (played by Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (played by Kevin Bacon), was intended to be the third manned mission to the moon, but things quickly go awry.
On the way to the moon, an oxygen tank in the service module explodes, causing the astronauts to lose power and oxygen. Lovell, Haise, and Swigert are forced to abandon their lunar landing and use the lunar module as a "lifeboat" to get back to Earth.
As the astronauts struggle to survive in the cramped and damaged spacecraft, Mission Control, led by flight director Gene Kranz (played by Ed Harris), works tirelessly to come up with a plan to bring them home safely. The team has to overcome numerous challenges, including a shortage of power and a limited supply of oxygen, as well as a damaged heat shield that could cause the spacecraft to burn up upon reentry.
Despite the obstacles, the team is able to safely guide the astronauts back to Earth, with Lovell, Haise, and Swigert splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on April 17, 1970.
