I love "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it was the first book I read when I arrived in the United States of America. It's a theme that sharpens each time I return to the text, and it has resonated even more deeply since I returned to Alabama as an adult. As a teenager I worked in Mr. As a child you understand it; as a teenager you learn from it; and as an adult you are faced with its struggles. So, like, if you write a book, and then you write another book that happened before the first book, and then the first book gets published, like, later than the book even though it was written before that other book. Or is it possible that time is just a flat circle? The cadences of his language lands well on our modern ears yet is never anachronistic to the time period, which is the summer of 1934. I read the book and the accompanying play several times during my childhood, but only after I read it again in college--far removed from my hometown where the book is rumored to be based--did I gain a new perspective. No other single title in our history comes close to the success of "Mockingbird.

While I might not be a lawyer standing up for an innocent man whose fate is determined by the color of his skin, more than 50 years after its conception, the plight and struggle "To Kill a Mockingbird" deals with remain far too real for our community on a state and national level. It was my first experience with real hatred and cruelty toward African-Americans. When I reread Lee's classic in college, it had morphed into this land where the lessons of the '60s, '70s, '80s, etc. The stories these men shared were always entertaining to say the least! I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years. Welch conveys with resignation the inevitabilities with what passes for justice a Black man facing an all-white jury.

My high school was mostly white, but a bird's-eye view of the courtyard showed black, white, Asian and Hispanic teens often mingling with people who didn't look just like the other. In 1960, I was 13 years old and had never witnessed outright cruelty to an African-American. And have you ever looked at fallen leaves, man, I mean really looked? A time of small-town heroes. Through her words and through the protagonist Atticus Finch, Lee also demonstrated that an individual committed to the true American ideal can make a difference, no matter how deep injustice is imbedded in society. The other showy role here is Scout, a character who is the Meta tomboy of American literature.

It gave me hope to see Atticus' humility and self-confidence, not just in representing Tom Robinson, but in teaching his children to be accepting and have open minds, to reject racism and prejudice. It supposedly existed somewhere in America, but it sounded as foreign to me as South America, and nearly as far away. This story is getting increasingly hinky. Or perhaps someone else did. What made Lee's words so meaningful was not just their powerful literary excellence, but their poignant portrayal of a dual system of justice as applied to the "negro. How could Lee not know her book had survived? But TKAM pulls those issues into focus through the relationships of lower-class townspeople with their wealthier counterparts, the divide between black and white, and the isolation and misunderstanding of Boo Radley. In a press release, Lee, 88, says her editor in the mid-1950'spreferred the flashbacks of a young Scout, and asked her to write a book from the view of the girl.
Excuse me for a moment, I believe this may require a couple of bong hits. Both narrator and character — for most of the show, as a 6-9 year-old — Scout, as well as Jem and Dill is played by an adult actor. I revisit this book every year because I want to, but I believe as Americans, in the climate our country is in, we all need to revisit this book because the future depends on it. Jezebel had the same thoughts. Experiencing the civil rights movement in real time and place and being side-by-side with African-American coworkers in the practice of medicine only accelerated the journey from a 13-year-old segregationist to a person much different today, one who longs for the day when color of one's skin has no relevance at all.
Is it the timeline inside the books? I love when Atticus tells Jem and Scout that they can shoot any kind of bird except a mockingbird because mockingbirds don't eat plants or harm anyone -- all they do is sing. It openly exposed what everyone knew, but no one spoke of - that justice and fairness and its application had a direct correlation to the color of one's skin. Melanie Moore has a nice stridency in her delivery as the youthful truth teller who may not understand everything going on but is not going to ever be shy in delivering the news about it. I don't remember if I read the book or saw the movie first, but "To Kill a Mockingbird" had a profound impact on me. The skill to successfully re-imagine what is known to all and revered by many is not a talent to be taken lightly. To a lot of people, Monroeville is Maycomb. This makes no sense on the face of it.
An interesting read: Thanks for the link; that was interesting. It's a lesson I carry with me to this day. Reading Harper Lee was my first introduction to a vision of a strong, moral South continually doing its best to do good; living in Alabama, I see her vision playing out every day. I'm fortunate that I grew up in an area where different races mixed without incident. Atticus Finch's bravery in defending a black man in a segregated community didn't exactly reflect my 1990s suburban life. The play now centers on a court trial — a White woman accuses a Black man of rape — and its aftermaths, with Finch as the focal character. It was one of those lavender shellacked hardcover editions public schools purchase by the score, overlain with images of a ball of yarn and a gold timepiece in a tree hollow, and of course a mockingbird flying high in the Alabama sky.
Starting the book as a young boy more interested in my own reading list than some old book about lawyers that my teacher forced upon me, I was struck by this strange place, the Deep South. Since joining Books-A-Million in 1985, I've been witness to sales of more than 1 million copies of various editions of this classic. I can swear I read some place—not recently—that she claimed TKAM was the only book she ever wrote. It's called Go Set a Watchman. Saturdays, 1 and 6:30 p.
The book made a lasting impression on me reinforced by the history unfolding all around me in those days. As a child, I played baseball, football and hide-n-seek all across the city with African-American boys whom I considered friends. And it sounds as if she did. Huck Finn has improved, Dickens is melodrama with little merit, Moby Dick is very exciting even the cetology bits, and Steinbeck is too preachy. What Lee did—write one book—is extremely unusual.
