Blithe Spirit is a comedic play written by Noël Coward in 1941. It centers around Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, and his wife Ruth, who decide to hold a séance in their home as research for Charles's latest book. However, things take a turn when the séance actually succeeds and Charles's first wife, Elvira, is summoned from the spirit realm.
Elvira, now a ghost, is unable to see or touch the living and can only communicate with Charles. She is determined to win Charles back and becomes jealous of Ruth, causing chaos and confusion in the household. Charles tries to rid himself of Elvira, but his efforts only make things worse, as he accidentally summons the ghost of a local medium during another séance.
Meanwhile, Ruth becomes increasingly suspicious of Charles's strange behavior and hires a local clairvoyant to communicate with Elvira and uncover the truth. The clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, ultimately helps Charles and Ruth banish Elvira back to the spirit realm, but not before causing even more mayhem and hilarity.
Throughout the play, the characters navigate the supernatural events with wit and humor, making Blithe Spirit a lighthearted and entertaining commentary on love, marriage, and the afterlife.
