Therefore, it has become a very popular oil painting in its own right, aside from being historic. Slightly tucked behind the three boat figures on the right side. When we see individuals conquer unfathomable terrors, we entertain the idea that we too could persevere if faced with a similar challenge. Copley chose to depict the moment of highest dramatic intensity -- the instant just prior to the third, presumably fatal, attack. The viewer can see a man desperately trying to spear the shark as it nears the boy, who is only a foot away. The artist did a marvelous job at taking you right to the moment and every single feeling associated with it. On a personal level, I think that Copley was doing the job that was assigned to him, but added his specific individual touches to reflect the artistic era in which it was generated. Copley and Brook became friends when Copley was in London in 1774, and he then commissioned him for the painting. The most interesting thing to me in this painting is the people on the boat they seem to be from different backgrounds in regard to wealth or social class. The rest of the crew is creating a human chain to try and reach him.

To be certain, there was a market for portraiture in London. It is such a great remnant of Old English art, while at the same possessing qualities of progression and tradition. Retrieved 27 June 2011. That is one of the great complexities of art, and really anything in general, each individual views the world differently. We can say the same about them in regards to wealth. Likewise, he had likely never seen a tiger shark, and there are inaccuracies in the ways it is painted. Within this painting, the view is of a beach, where most of the community is enjoying a day at the beach but they have encountered a bleeding almost dead shark on the sands of the beach. It is also similar to a figure within Transfiguration 1516-1520 , a painting Copley saw at the Vatican.

Watson was rescued before the third attack by his shipmates. Charles le Brun is most remembered today for his MĂ©thode pour apprendre Ă dessiner les passions 1698 , a posthumously published artistic treatise that explored how emotions manifest upon the human visage. The composition contains ten figures and a tiger shark, a carnivorous fish so large that its body extends beyond the confines of the painting. Copley had never visited Havana, and it is likely that he had never seen a shark, much less one attacking a person. His leg would have to be amputated at the knee, but he survived his ordeal. The story of Watson And The shark came about in 1749 when the attack took place. While lying in the harbor at Havana, it was very hot on board the Royal Consort, about four o'clock in the afternoon of the 14th July.
