"American Violet" is a powerful and poignant film that tells the true story of Dee Roberts, a young African American mother living in a small Texas town who becomes caught up in a corrupt and discriminatory criminal justice system. Dee, played by Nicole Beharie, is a single mother struggling to make ends meet and provide for her four children. She works as a cleaning lady and is barely able to keep a roof over their heads.
One day, Dee is arrested and charged with drug possession, despite the fact that she has never used drugs and has no criminal record. It turns out that the police and the district attorney's office are targeting Dee and other poor, black residents of the town as part of a so-called "drug sweep." They are using flimsy and often fabricated evidence to arrest and prosecute these individuals, all in an effort to boost their own arrest and conviction rates and make the town look safer.
Dee's arrest and subsequent trial have a devastating impact on her and her family. She is forced to leave her children in the care of her mother while she fights her case, and she faces the prospect of spending years in prison and losing everything she has worked so hard to build. Dee is offered a plea deal by the district attorney, but she refuses to plead guilty to a crime she did not commit. Instead, she decides to fight back and seek justice.
With the help of an ACLU lawyer, played by Tim Blake Nelson, and a dedicated team of legal advocates, Dee takes on the corrupt criminal justice system and fights to clear her name. Along the way, she discovers that she is not alone and that many other people in her community have been similarly targeted and mistreated by the authorities. Dee becomes a leader and an inspiration to others, and she helps to bring about real change in her community.

The movie occasionally intercuts commercials from the Gore-Bush campaign then under way, to no particular purpose, except to remind me that as Texas governor, Bush commuted the sentence of only one of the 152 people put on Death Row under his reign, even though public defenders presented no defense at all for 41 of them and a third of their defense attorneys were later disbarred or sanctioned.

The Voice tells Violet she will be alone forever and then die. She reaches out to Martin to apologize for being rude to him and he forgives her and also apologizes for his role in their breakup. Dee, a young mother of four, who was not found with drugs and had no history of drug use, was arrested primarily because she went outside to drag her little girl to safety. When Violet opens up about what she loves about the project he initially seems receptive, but later uses the information to denigrate her, revealing he will never back the film. When he fires her, she immediately reaches out to financiers she knows who are looking to expand into production, and is able to become their President of Production.
