Between Shades of Gray is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Ruta Sepetys. The movie, released in 2011, tells the harrowing story of Lina, a young Lithuanian girl who is deported to a labor camp in Siberia during the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union.
The film begins with Lina living a happy life with her family in Lithuania. However, their world is turned upside down when Soviet officers arrive at their home and arrest Lina's father, accusing him of being a traitor. Lina, her mother, and her younger brother are also taken and deported to a labor camp in Siberia.
As they journey to the camp, Lina and her family are subjected to brutal treatment and inhumane conditions. They are crowded into cramped, filthy train cars with no food or water, and Lina witnesses several of her fellow prisoners die from starvation and disease.
