Canticle is a fantasy novel by R.A. Salvatore, published in 1990. It is the first book in the Cleric Quintet series, which follows the story of Cadderly, a young cleric who is torn between his responsibilities as a member of the Edificant Library and his desire to protect his loved ones.

Cadderly is a studious and dedicated young man, who has spent most of his life training to become a cleric at the Edificant Library. He is skilled in magic and devoted to the gods, but he is also deeply attached to his family and friends. When a group of bandits attack his home and kill his father, Cadderly is forced to confront the harsh realities of the world outside the library. He sets out on a quest for revenge, aided by his friends Danica, a monk, and Pikel, a dwarf.

As they journey through the land of Faerun, Cadderly and his companions encounter a variety of dangers and obstacles, including rival bandits, monsters, and dark mages. Along the way, Cadderly grapples with his own doubts and fears, as he struggles to balance his duty to the library with his desire to protect those he loves.

Canticle is a compelling tale of adventure and self-discovery, set in a richly imagined fantasy world. Salvatore's writing is vivid and engaging, and he does an excellent job of creating complex and well-rounded characters. The book is also infused with a strong moral theme, as Cadderly grapples with the idea of what it means to be a hero and the sacrifices that one must make in the pursuit of justice.

Overall, Canticle is an engaging and well-written fantasy novel that will appeal to fans of the genre. It is the first book in a series, and readers who enjoy Canticle are likely to want to continue with the rest of the Cleric Quintet.

Cadderly doesn't have much help except from a pair of dwarfs, his girlfriend who is a warrior monk and a druid. So I was reading, and I was reading, and reading, but no cleric. I find myself wishing for more details so I can picture the scenes better. I loved all the characters and i will be continuing this series. I also think having a monk along with our priest of Deneir is interesting, though he really seems more like a priest of Gond. I remember enjoying these novels more than his Drizzt novels and when I decided to reread I stupidly thought I would find the same novel I had back then. It's on the level of which high school teachers would use as a basis of comparisons to teach their students on what NOT to do when writing.

If I had read this by itself, I may have been underwhelmed. Salvatore, or even just want to an easy escape into fantasy. This was a really good book and a nice way to start a series. But I do know that if I want a nice quick fantasy story, I tend to turn to this author. When he reveals it to his evil fellowship at the hidden stronghold Castle Trinity, the priest Barjin takes control of it and sets off to the major stronghold of the Snowflake Mountains — the Edificant Library. Depending on what you have lined up to read instead they might not be worth the payout of a 5 book investment. I just couldn't keep reading anymore.

Salvatore a chance when I was in middle school after I'd had all my Magic the Gathering novels confiscated. The first book gives us an intro into the lives of multiple characters. There is a good amount of potential here, and I like Cadderly more than Drizzt, he's nuanced and not so much of a Mary Sue. I hung in there for the first few chapters; once I got hold on the characters, it becomes a page-turner, with a YA romance budding yes! When the priest swings it, the girl's mouth enlarges rapi Barjin is a very effective evil antagonist. Cadderly Bonaduce is "the young scholar". Barjin is "the evil priest".

I didn't realize until the second book in the series that I don't think Salvatore is a great author, though, so I knocked it back down to four stars. Interestingly enough, this series turned out to be one of his most popular. For these reasons, I really enjoyed it and can respect what the author was doing. It's got strong characters, a good female lead, and an interesting area of Faerun you don't usually see. It's a well-written, fun story and it's interesting how something as innocuous acting on your heart's desire without thought for the consequences can be so dangerous. Dark elves were comparatively more interesting, but only because of their weird spidery BDSM associations. I suppose that is the power of expectation. A few major characters died in this book, but that warrants a cursory paragraph or two and doesn't impact much. The villains in this story are one-dimensional caricatures you'd find on Saturday morning cartoons.

A classic adventure from the creator of Drizzt! The Screaming Maiden is a scepter with an obsidian statuette on top of an attractive young girl. This book was like a cup of hot chocolate. . I wouldn't fault a person for stopping after the first if the story didn't grab onto them with any gusto. This is my second read-through this series and if I recall correctly, the books get better and better as they go on.

To view it, Barjin is a very effective evil antagonist. The library is the target of a Chaos Curse, and the priests start to do weird things. Salvatore a whole lot, the Drizzt series mostly, but time came when I felt like I outgrew them. First book in a five book series The Cleric Quintet set in the Forgotten Realms. The book is perfect for those who wants to read dungeons and dragons, forgotten realms books. Now from the hidden vaults beneath the library a devastating curse is unleashed, and a young cleric must battle the terrifying creatures set loose by a malevolent, consuming essence that's been released, before his own brethren turn against him.
