Salvatore a chance when I was in middle school after I'd had all my Magic the Gathering novels confiscated. The first book gives us an intro into the lives of multiple characters. There is a good amount of potential here, and I like Cadderly more than Drizzt, he's nuanced and not so much of a Mary Sue. I didn't realize until the second book in the series that I don't think Salvatore is a great author, though, so I knocked it back down to four stars. Interestingly enough, this series turned out to be one of his most popular. For these reasons, I really enjoyed it and can respect what the author was doing. It's got strong characters, a good female lead, and an interesting area of Faerun you don't usually see.
