Hansel and Gretel are the main characters in the German fairy tale of the same name, which has been widely retold and adapted in various forms since it was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. The story follows the two siblings as they are abandoned in the forest by their parents and must find their way back home while being pursued by a wicked witch who wants to eat them.
Hansel is the older of the two siblings and is depicted as clever and resourceful. When their parents decide to abandon them in the forest, Hansel uses his wit to leave a trail of breadcrumbs so that they can find their way back home. He is also able to outsmart the witch by pretending to be too thin to eat, leading her to lock him in a cage and fatten him up before she can eat him.
Gretel, on the other hand, is depicted as brave and bold. When Hansel is captured by the witch, she comes up with a plan to outwit the witch and save her brother. She tricks the witch into leaning into the oven to check on a batch of gingerbread, and then pushes her into the oven to burn to death.
Despite their differences in personality, Hansel and Gretel are united in their determination to survive and find their way home. They work together to overcome the challenges they face in the forest, and ultimately emerge victorious over the witch.
Throughout the story, Hansel and Gretel embody the themes of resourcefulness, bravery, and the power of sibling bonds. Their determination and ingenuity in the face of danger serve as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of family.
