Fishing becomes a ritualistic engagement with the metaphor of birth, and birth becomes a metaphorical perspective of his writing process, and Hemingway engages continuously in both throughout his writing career. That's more than nothing. The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. Ishmael is a young boy, who instead of being a "end is nigh" Nostradamus is a loving, weeping young boy who cares deeply about the world. I also understand that it celebrates the ridiculous American idea that you're only a REAL man if you've done something entirely purposeless, but really dangerous, in pursuit of making yourself look like the bull with the biggest sexual equipment. In fact, the fish and Santiago are both victimized, together, by the sharks that feast on his catch. With school starting soon and the days getting shorter, I read about Santiago and his dream.
IF you can find any of them they are wonderful. But it has the feel of a parable. Cut your line, land your boat and go to McDonald's! No, of course not. But still, I didn't enjoy the story much. Perhaps the most memorable claim is Waldmeir's answer to the question—What is the book's message? And then begins the real battle, not the grand epic, but a doomed, unenthusiastic battle against reality - with the knowledge that no grand ambition can ever succeed. But if I made them good and true enough they would mean many things.

I struggled mightily with this one, finding a hook, then having it pull away, grabbing hold of an idea and watching it disappear beneath waves of uncertainty. This story is emblematic of it, and corroborated the concept phenomenonally , in entirety and handsomely! But none of these scars were fresh. He drops his line and hooks a marlin. Time may show it to be the best single piece of any of us, I mean his and my contemporaries.
