I originally picked up this book in Ireland while on a business trip. I have read all of her books and have never been disappointed. Here, our author is sending a clear message, that being these characters are adults, and even though they behave like children they must be adults because they use those naughty words and the author said they were adults and they are old enough to go into a pub. Holly's family spent the rest of the morning trying to convince Ciara how she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Holly is a devastated, vulnerable character trying to do the best in the circumstances. I Love You became even more popular when it was turned into a film starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. I thought the book was great! I finally watched the movie again recently and decided I had to buy the book and re-read it.
She opened the fridge and stared in at the empty shelves. You'll never want to put it down, it will make you laugh, cry and wish for everything to be perfect. Gerry's death devastates Holly. No one could imagine Holly and Gerry without each other. Grief manifests in different ways. Until the unthinkable happens.
By no means had he been the healthiest man on the earth, but he'd been healthy enough to. And Gerry himself, despite being dead, is one of the more intriguing personalities in the book even if he only appears in Holly's memory. Life is for living, she realises — but it always helps if there's an angel watching over you. Now, perhaps things in Ireland are QUITE different than in the USA, and if so, well. Months after the couple married Gerry was disgnosed with a life threatening illness which he finally sucommed to and passed away. All that was left was a bundle of memories and an image of his face that became more and more vague each day.
This is a story that will make you laugh, and cry along with the characters, and hope for the best outcome possible for them. I LOVE YOU is a book that leaves you feeling a mix of both. I was sitting on the beach in Canaries crying my eyes out, so much so that I had to take off my sunglasses and dry my eyes. The time just seemed to pass her by these days without her knowing what time or even what day it was.
She took a deep breath, dried her eyes and tried to shake some sense into herself. I also enjoyed the movie based on this book. . I do love the movie PS I Love You, but let me tell you something, THE BOOK IS NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIE!!! Simple and some difficult things are all part of Gerry's big plan to make Holly live again. Holly is immersed in a grief so profound that nothing can make her leave her house. Despite the efforts of her family and friends, she can't move on.
But there's no gooey love story with some new Hot Guy Du Jour, nor does it avoid the darker, more depressing experiences. Every time, Holly opens a note, she can feel Gerry around her which brings her some happiness. She held out her arms in the darkness and slowly began to find her way back to the bed. It would do you the world of good to go out for a walk. I liked this book enough to buy another Ahern book "Love, Rosie.

Not only was she enduring the loss, she also had to come to terms with life moving forward for the res t of the world, while she felt stuck in this 'limbo' of not quite knowing where and how to fit in this new life she was forced into by circumstances beyond her control. Holly is now left all alone to deal with her loss. Eventually she plucks up the courage to retrieve the envelope. The plot, the characters and the ending were all satisfying and fully developed. Just vegetables and yogurt long past its sell-by date leaving a horrible stench in the fridge. But not Holly and Gerry. Now if you want to read a really excellent Irish writer, try Maeve Binchy.

However, I winced at some of the writing.
