"A Time to Kill" is a novel by John Grisham that was published in 1989. It tells the story of a young, white lawyer named Jake Brigance who is defending a black man named Carl Lee Hailey, who has been charged with the murder of two white men who raped and brutalized his young daughter.
The story takes place in a small town in Mississippi during the 1980s, a time when racial tensions were high and the civil rights movement was still a recent memory. Jake is reluctant to take on the case at first, knowing that it will be difficult to win and that he will face backlash from the community. However, he is eventually convinced to take it on by his mentor, Lucien Wilbanks, and by the Hailey family, who are desperate for justice.
As the trial begins, Jake finds himself facing a number of challenges. Ultimately, Jake's efforts are successful and Carl Lee is acquitted. However, the story does not have a happy ending for everyone. The Ku Klux Klan responds to the verdict by burning down Jake's house and attempting to kill him, and Carl Lee's family is forced to flee the town in fear for their safety.

At no point did I feel like I was waiting for the court proceedings to start. Willard answers a few questions, but when they start asking about the details of the charges and Billy Ray Cobb's involvement, Willard says he'd like to speak with a lawyer present. Walls radios the deputies, who hand off affidavits to County Judge Percy Bullard, who in turn produces warrants for the arrests of Cobb and Willard. I never had the heart to tell him I'd prefer another author. Makes you realize all the politics and behind the door negotiations going on. All concerned with the case are intimidated and frightened.
The bullet hits a national guardsman policing the demonstrations, paralyzing him. This is the case here. The tiny town of Clanton, Mississippi, is shocked when two drunk and drug-addled thugs viciously assault a ten-year-old girl, failing to kill her only because they could not find a bridge from which to throw the child. The state's key witness, the black deputy accidentally shot by Carl Lee, is sympathetic with the defense and well coached by Jake. All, that is, but Carl-Lee Haley, father of the victim. DI Drake is not a lovable person. There was so much going on all times thanks to the KKK. It will keep you guessing right up to the end. A 4 stars recommendation This was John Grisham' s very first book.
What a rollercoaster of a book! The book is set in Wales and features Detective Inspector Ian Drake and you can imagine someone like him in every police station, he is not what the general fictional DI is like, he comes across as just a jobbing bobby just trying to get the job done. Little do the tourists on their way to Snowdon know what is happening in this supposed sleepy village! Considering this, in such situations, it is not only MORALLY RIGHT, but also important to mete out Punishments like these to the culprits. This is the 5th book in this series that I have read, somehow I have missed No 4? Also, he takes a little time to date Annie, a university lecturer at Bangor. Hard to believe it was John Grisham first novel. Lots of people would like to see harry Jones dead.
I think this might be the best in the series yet. Detective Inspector Ian Drake and his partner, Detective Sergeant Sara Morgan who is relatively new to the team, are on their way to interview a suspect when they get a call about a missing person. This was surely the novel that got the Grisham craze started and, to me, proves to be one of his timeless classics. One of my least favorites of Grisham's books, and that's saying something. I live in the region of North Wales in which the Inspector Drake books are set, so the landscapes are very familiar to me and I think the author has a great way of bringing those areas to life in vivid detail.
That was also a detriment towards the defense. I would honestly recommend it for any mystery lover. This is coming from someone who does not normally favor filtering words through the PC processor. So in that light, A Time to Kill is a timeless tale. The plot is fairly complex, but still easy to follow. I have read the first bo DI Ian Drake is not happy when he is asked to investigate the disappearance of Harry Jones, a local antique dealer but that quickly changes when his body is found. The only thing more heated than the KKK opposing the blacks was the rivalry between Jake and the prosecutor.
She is ultimately hospitalized through the trial's end. This means Drake has more people interfering than he would like, in fact he would prefer nobody interfered. It had lots of twists and turns and plenty of red herrings. You might think that a ten-year-old girl being raped by two drunken men will leave you feeling sorry for her and her family, on the edge of shedding tears? Inspector Drake has OCD which has had a negative effect on his marriage but in this novel we see him stepping out into the world as a single man again and I found it heartwarming to see him struggle when he dates a new lady. He seeks guidance from long-time liberal activist Lucien Wilbanks Donald Sutherland , a once-great civil rights lawyer who was disbarred for violence on a picket line. This is the 5th in the DI Drake series. To his surprise, that someone pulls a gun and shoots him dead. He hides in a bathroom past closing time, waits until he doesn't hear any lingering staff in the halls, and then leaves the bathroom to case the joint.
