Variations of the U.S. Flag
Different designs were likely used due to slow and inconsistent communication as well as the gradual transition of the thirteen colonies into states. It was the same design as the flag for the British East India Company that flew from 1701 to 1801. The flag is said to have been made in the fall of 1775 from a standard British red ensign. Each state in our nation has its own unique flag with very American elements such as the red, white or blue colors, or images of state monuments easily recognizable as America, and the states make up our great nation. Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Continental Congress from 1774—1789, gave symbolic meanings to the three colors of the flag.
