I really enjoyed the first half of this book. But there is also plenty of uplifting, insightful, and garden-related poems too. Piercy is a novelist and poet, although I'm more familiar with her poetry and agree with the Time Magazine reviewer who writes that ". Retrieved June 21, 2017. To me, she seems to sometimes objectify the people she is fighting against and that's where she loses me.
This book by Piercy has asterisks beside dozens of her poems. Other of her novels, such as Summer People and The Longings of Women are set during the modern day. She lives in Wellfleet on Cape Cod, Massachusetts with her husband, Ira Wood. The pitcher cries for water to carry and a person for work that is real. .
The work of the world is common as mud. I earmarked 8 poems for later reference. I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart, who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience, who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward, who do what has to be done, again and again. This work, however, is a two-fold tragedy. Marge Piercy has a lot of beautiful imagery. This novel is considered a classic of utopian "speculative" science fiction as well as a feminist classic. They seem to become natives of that element, the black sleek heads of seals bouncing like half-submerged balls. I always mark favorites in my books of poetry and anthologies. The work of the world is common as mud.
